Observe and report physical, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial aspects of each patient's condition. Provide complete personal hygiene care and assist with patient comfort needs. Turn and position patients to maintain proper body alignment. Lift, ambulate, and transfer patients safely. Promote patient physical independence by encouraging and teaching self-care activities. Assist patients with personal hygiene, bathing, oral care, eating, dressing, undressing, and other care activities as needed. Participate in patient admissions by helping provide a secure and reassuring environment. Orient patients to the unit and check for contraband when indicated. Assist the Registered Nurse in implementing nursing admission procedures. Assist with treatments, prepare equipment, and perform selected procedures after appropriate instruction. Observe infection control practices. Implement bowel and bladder programs. Support a customer service culture that treats all customers with respect and civility. Serve as a treatment team member and help motivate patients toward treatment plan goals. Basic Qualifications: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English. Must meet one of the following Nursing Assistant basic requirements: six months of general experience demonstrating the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform Nursing Assistant work; or one year of education above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation; or completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related Nursing Assistant training course or program of less than one year. Must be subject to a background/security investigation. Must pass pre-employment drug testing and remain subject to testing requirements for this testing designated position. GS-5 Qualification Requirements: Must have one year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level that is directly related to the assignment; or Must have successfully completed a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care, or possess a bachelor's degree. Specialized experience may include functioning as a nursing care team member and assisting licensed nursing staff and other care team members with the full range of nursing care for patients or residents receiving outpatient, home, community living, preventative, acute, sub-acute, chronic, maintenance, or hospice care. Must be able to assist with the full range of nursing care for patients or residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long-term care, or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. Must be able to communicate orally with patients or residents, families, interdisciplinary team members, and other personnel. Must be able to serve as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with orientation and assessing practical experience in a clinical setting. Must be able to recognize and react to emergent patient or resident care situations and intervene while awaiting assistance. GS-5 is the full performance level for this vacancy.
