About the Role

Hamtramck Recycling is looking for an Entry-Level Diesel Mechanic Apprentice to join our maintenance team.

This position is designed for someone who wants to build a career working on diesel-powered trucks and heavy equipment. You do not need years of experience to apply. We are willing to train the right person who has a strong work ethic, mechanical aptitude, and a desire to learn.

Whether you've worked on your own vehicles, helped friends with repairs, attended vocational classes, or simply enjoy working with tools and figuring out how things work, we'd like to hear from you.

You will work alongside experienced mechanics performing inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on the equipment that keeps our recycling operation moving.



As an apprentice, you'll gain experience with:

  • Preventive maintenance on diesel trucks and heavy equipment
  • Oil changes, lubrication, and fluid services
  • Replacing filters, belts, hoses, and batteries
  • Diagnosing basic mechanical problems
  • Brake and suspension inspections
  • Hydraulic system fundamentals
  • Using diagnostic and shop tools safely
  • Reading service manuals and repair procedures
  • Welding and fabrication related to equipment repairs
  • Maintaining parts inventory and documenting completed work


Equipment You'll Work On

You may assist in maintaining equipment such as:

  • Roll-off trucks
  • Semi tractors and trailers
  • Wheel loaders
  • Excavators
  • Material handlers
  • Forklifts
  • Other equipment used in recycling operation


A Typical Day

You'll start each day reviewing maintenance priorities with the team lead before jumping into the day's work. Some days you'll perform routine services, inspections, and preventative maintenance. Other days you'll assist with troubleshooting equipment, replacing components, welding or fabrication repairs, or prepping equipment for service. This is a hands-on apprenticeship where you'll learn by doing, and the work you do will play an important role in keeping our equipment operating safely and efficiently.

Minimum Requirements

  • Ability to handle physical work, including lifting, standing, and working outdoors
  • Basic familiarity with hand tools or mechanical work (any experience level welcome)
  • Reliable transportation to our facility in Hamtramck
  • Authorized to work in the United States

We process and recycle industrial and commercial materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. Our operation plays an important role in supporting manufacturing, construction, and environmental sustainability throughout the region.
