MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a nationally recognized Magnet designated academic medical center, is seeking a Nurse Manager to lead our Critical Care Float Pool. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an operationally focused manager who excels at building high-performing teams, advancing nursing practice, and supporting excellence across multiple intensive care units.

About the Critical Care Float Pool

Our Critical Care Float Pool is comprised of highly skilled ICU nurses who provide expert care across a variety of adult critical care environments. These experienced clinicians are essential to maintaining safe staffing, operational flexibility, and exceptional patient care throughout the hospital.

The Nurse Manager will oversee a versatile team that supports specialized critical care areas, partnering closely with unit leadership to ensure seamless staffing, consistent clinical excellence, and outstanding patient outcomes.

The Opportunity

As the Nurse Manager, you will provide operational, clinical, and professional leadership for the Critical Care Float Pool. You will be responsible for workforce planning, staff engagement, quality improvement, competency management, and ensuring the delivery of evidence-based nursing care across multiple ICU settings.

This leader will:

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Critical Care Float Pool.
  • Recruit, mentor, coach, and develop a highly engaged team of ICU nurses while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of nursing care delivered by float pool staff, ensuring compliance with evidence-based practice, regulatory standards, and organizational policies.
  • Conduct audits of clinical documentation and patient care processes to identify opportunities for improvement and mitigate clinical risk.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Patient Safety, Infection Prevention, and Nursing Leadership teams to investigate patient safety events, implement corrective action plans, and promote best practices.
  • Address clinical practice concerns while ensuring adherence to professional standards, hospital policies, scope of practice, and patient care protocols.
  • Serve as an expert clinical resource for nurses managing complex patient care situations and ethical decision-making.
  • Partner with ICU leadership to identify practice gaps and implement targeted interventions that improve quality and consistency of care.
  • Support professional growth through specialty certification, continuing education, leadership development, and advanced clinical training.
  • Represent the Critical Care Float Pool within shared governance councils and interdisciplinary committees, advocating for staff while advancing nursing practice.
  • Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on patient safety, staffing effectiveness, nurse engagement, and operational excellence.
  • Analyze staffing, quality, safety, and patient outcome metrics to identify trends, improve performance, and optimize resource utilization.
  • Champion initiatives that reduce hospital-acquired conditions, improve patient experience, and support the ongoing success of our Magnet journey.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
  • Current RN license in the District of Columbia
  • 3-4 years minimum in a hospital setting
  • Current BLS certification

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Nursing or related field
  • Recent leadership experience in an ICU or critical care environment
  • CCRN or other nationally recognized specialty certification
  • Experience leading quality improvement initiatives, regulatory readiness, and nursing professional practice programs

This position has a hiring range of : USD $102,606.00 - USD $196,996.00 /Yr.
