About the Opportunity
A growing multi-site healthcare organization is seeking an experienced and highly analytical Director of Purchasing to oversee purchasing, vendor relationships, laboratory services, and related financial performance across a large network of dental practices.
This is a key leadership position for someone who understands the complexities of supporting multiple healthcare or dental locations , can identify opportunities to improve purchasing efficiency and profitability, and is comfortable working closely with practice leadership and finance teams.
The ideal candidate is technology-savvy, highly organized, financially minded, and comfortable working with large amounts of data . They should be an advanced user of Microsoft Excel and confident creating, maintaining, analyzing, and updating spreadsheets and reporting tools.
Experience in dental purchasing is strongly preferred , although candidates with significant medical, healthcare, or multi-site purchasing experience will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities Purchasing & Procurement
- Lead purchasing strategy and procurement activities across numerous dental practices.
- Develop and maintain purchasing standards, processes, and controls across the organization.
- Evaluate vendors, pricing, contracts, product quality, and service levels.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, rebates, and other opportunities to reduce costs.
- Identify opportunities for standardization and purchasing efficiencies across practices.
- Monitor supply costs and purchasing trends to identify areas of concern or opportunity.
- Partner with practice leaders to ensure appropriate inventory levels while minimizing waste and unnecessary spending.
- Establish and monitor purchasing policies and procedures.
- Maintain strong relationships with key suppliers and vendors.
- Research new products, technologies, and purchasing solutions that may benefit the organization.
Laboratory Services
- Oversee dental laboratory relationships and services across multiple practices.
- Evaluate laboratory costs, pricing, quality, turnaround times, and service levels.
- Negotiate laboratory pricing and agreements.
- Establish appropriate laboratory standards and processes.
- Monitor laboratory spending and identify opportunities for cost savings and improved quality.
- Partner with clinical and operational leadership to address laboratory-related concerns.
- Stay current on changes and advancements in dental laboratory technology, digital dentistry, and related services.
Financial & Business Analysis
- Review practice budgets, P&Ls, purchasing reports, and expense trends.
- Analyze purchasing and laboratory expenses in relation to practice production and profitability.
- Identify unusual spending patterns, cost variances, and opportunities for improvement.
- Develop reporting and tracking tools to help leadership understand purchasing and laboratory performance.
- Partner with Finance and Operations to establish appropriate spending targets and monitor performance.
- Provide actionable recommendations based on financial and operational data.
- Help practices understand how purchasing and laboratory decisions impact overall profitability.
Technology & Reporting
- Create, maintain, and continuously improve Excel spreadsheets and reporting tools.
- Analyze large amounts of purchasing, inventory, laboratory, and financial data.
- Develop dashboards, tracking tools, budgets, forecasts, and other reporting mechanisms as needed.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date data across purchasing and laboratory systems.
- Be comfortable learning and implementing new technology and software platforms.
- Leverage technology to streamline purchasing processes and improve visibility into spending.
- Stay current with emerging technology, particularly as it relates to dental purchasing, laboratory services, and digital dentistry.
Qualifications
Required:
- Proven experience in purchasing, procurement, supply chain, or vendor management.
- Experience supporting multiple locations, practices, facilities, or business units.
- Strong financial and analytical skills with the ability to understand budgets, P&Ls, expenses, and cost trends.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including the ability to create, maintain, analyze, and update complex spreadsheets.
- Strong negotiation and vendor-management skills.
- Excellent organizational and project-management abilities.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with executives, clinicians, practice leaders, and vendors.
- Ability to work independently in a remote or hybrid environment.
- Willingness to travel approximately 5%.
Preferred:
- Dental purchasing or procurement experience.
- Experience with dental laboratory services and/or dental laboratory vendor management.
- Medical or healthcare purchasing experience.
- Experience supporting a large multi-site healthcare or dental organization.
- Experience with dental practice management systems, procurement platforms, ERP systems, or related technology.
- Familiarity with digital dentistry and evolving dental laboratory technologies.
- Experience analyzing practice-level P&Ls and operating budgets.
Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be someone who can think strategically while also getting into the details .
You should be comfortable managing purchasing across numerous locations rather than working with a single facility. You understand that purchasing is not simply about finding the lowest price - it is about balancing cost, quality, availability, standardization, clinical needs, vendor performance, and overall practice profitability .
You are also comfortable working with numbers and financial reports and can look at a practice P&L or budget and identify where purchasing or laboratory expenses may be impacting performance.
You don't need to be a data scientist, but you should be very comfortable with technology and Excel and able to build or improve the tools needed to manage a complex, multi-location purchasing environment.
