Position Overview

The CRNA will provide safe, individualized anesthesia care throughout the perioperative process in a fast-paced ambulatory ophthalmic surgical setting. This includes evaluating patients before surgery, developing appropriate anesthesia plans, administering anesthesia independently, monitoring patients throughout procedures, and supporting safe postoperative recovery.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable exercising independent clinical judgment while working collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, surgical technologists, and other members of the perioperative team.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-anesthesia assessments and review relevant medical histories, medications, allergies, laboratory findings, and surgical plans

  • Identify anesthesia-related risks and develop individualized plans appropriate to each patient and procedure

  • Explain anesthesia plans, expectations, risks, and postoperative considerations to patients

  • Independently administer anesthesia within applicable state regulations, organizational policies, and professional standards

  • Continuously monitor patients cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and physiological status throughout procedures

  • Recognize and respond promptly to changes in patient condition

  • Manage airways, medications, fluids, and other anesthesia-related clinical needs

  • Provide appropriate postoperative anesthesia and recovery support

  • Evaluate patients for safe transfer through the phases of post-anesthesia care

  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely clinical documentation

  • Perform required safety checks of anesthesia equipment, medications, and supplies

  • Follow infection-prevention, medication-safety, and quality-assurance protocols

  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, nursing staff, surgical technologists, and facility leadership

  • Participate in continuous quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives

  • Deliver a calm, compassionate, and reassuring experience for patients and their families

Required Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program

  • Current CRNA certification through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists

  • Active Virginia Registered Nurse and applicable advanced-practice credentials, or the ability to obtain them

  • Authorization to practice as a CRNA in Virginia

  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications

  • Strong understanding of anesthesia pharmacology, airway management, patient monitoring, and perioperative safety

  • Ability to assess patients and make sound clinical decisions independently

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Commitment to patient safety, clinical quality, and compassionate care

  • Ability to function effectively in an efficient ambulatory surgical environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience practicing independently as a CRNA

  • Ambulatory surgery center experience

  • Ophthalmic anesthesia experience

  • Experience working in a high-efficiency procedural environment

  • Strong background in preoperative assessment, intraoperative monitoring, and postoperative care

  • Confidence managing medically complex or higher-risk patients within an outpatient setting

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with surgeons and perioperative teams
