First Job After College: A Survival Guide

The transition from school to first job is the hardest career step you'll ever take — not because the work is harder, but because nobody teaches you the unwritten rules.

Before You Apply

  • Pick 2-3 industries, not 8.
  • Identify 30 companies, not 300.
  • Tailor each application — even slightly.

The First 90 Days

  1. Listen 80%, talk 20%. The first month is for learning the team and the work, not impressing anyone.
  2. Take notes obsessively. Write down every name, process and acronym.
  3. Find a buddy. Someone 2 years ahead of you is the most underrated resource.
  4. Ship a small win in week 4. Doesn't need to be huge — just visible.
  5. Set up regular 1:1s with your manager. Bring updates, blockers and one ask each time.
